The Italian striker admitted Antonio Conte, his former boss at Juventus, had been after him for months.

But at just as the transfer window was about to shut last month, Pochettino persuaded the 32-year-old to move to Spurs in a £14m switch from Swansea.

“At the very last minute Pochettino called me and convinced me. The Tottenham project is impressive.

“They have done very well in the last few years and I fit very well with this project. I can help them a lot.

“It is clear that Pochettino played a very important role in the decision. I have known him since he was playing in Spain.

“I made my first-team debut (with Athletico Bilbao) against him at the San Mames Stadium. He was at the end of his playing career and I was at the beginning of mine.

“Then he was the Espanyol manager and I faced him several more times. Now I play under him at Tottenham and I really want to give my best.

“I’m happy because everything came out perfect. I fit in very well here. I really want to contribute and I hope that I can score a lot of goals to help the club and meet our objectives.”

Llorente made his Spurs debut on Wednesday, replacing two-goal hotshot Harry Kane in the 87th minute of the 3-1 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.

“Kane’s awesome, one of the best strikers in the world, if not to say the best,” he added.

“In front of goal, he’s lethal. The truth is he is in a sweet moment, and we have to make the best of that. He gives us so much.”
