That’s the scathing assessment from Reds legend Steve Nicol, who has slammed Lovren following his display in last night’s Champions League tie.

Liverpool had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Sevilla at Anfield yesterday with their defence again catching plenty of criticism.

Lovren started the Group E clash but Kop great Nicol was certainly far from impressed by the 28-year-old.

When talking about Croatian’s defensive display, Nicol said: “I think it just tells you how bad the rest of them are.

“How bad can Klavan be? How bad must he be?

“I would agree with that [Lovren was a great defender at Southampton]. How long ago was that? We’re talking two years, three years.

“I can assure you for three years he has been making mistake after mistake after mistake. Liverpool have paid the price almost all the time.”

Nicol added: “It’s okay for people to say ‘well they’re scoring three and only letting in two’ but you can’t continue to do that and continue to get away with it.

“The other thing that’s happened is the crowd. The crowd goes from being vibrant and behind the team and excited to panicking.

“That just makes its way onto the field and you end up with what happened today. Liverpool nearly threw it away.”

Liverpool were hammered 5-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side must bounce back from their difficult week when they host Burnley on Saturday.
