That’s the opinion of former Blues star Graeme Le Saux in the wake of Jose Mourinho’s suggestion that the Italian gaffer deploys defensive tactics.

Conte has utilised a 3-4-3 system since the opening stages of last season, with three centre-backs flanked by a pair of wing-backs.

And Le Saux has hailed Conte’s approach, suggesting Chelsea's goalscoring record since he adopted the formation speaks for itself.

Le Saux said: "Jose Mourinho was a little rude about Chelsea after last weekend's matches, criticising Conte's side for defensive football.

"But that’s typical Mourinho, up to his usual mischief! Chelsea are not a negative side – the goals for column tells you that!

"Whether you think Chelsea play a back three or five it’s irrelevant really. They’re a five when they need to be and a three when they need to be. And we have seen how destructive Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses can be when they go forward.

"What I like about Chelsea is that even when they are under pressure they always offer a threat on the counter. They’re great athletes and can get from back to front in no time at all."

Le Saux’s comments come off the back of ex-Chelsea boss Mourinho aiming a dig at his old side after Manchester United’s win over Basel on Tuesday night.

Taking a swipe at Arsenal and Tottenham too, Mourinho said: "It’s quite trendy now, teams playing with five defenders, sometimes we like to say three, but I only see them with five."

Meanwhile, reigning champions Chelsea return to Premier League action when they play host to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger’s men came out on top in their last two official meetings - the FA Cup final and Community Shield.
