Herrera is yet to start a Premier League game for the club this season.

But Jose Mourinho still regards the Spaniard as a key part of his squad going forward.

Mourinho has already made it clear United will trigger an option to extend Herrera’s contract by a year.

His present deal expires next summer, but he won’t be allowed to walk away for nothing.

The Manchester Evening News says Herrera is not rushing to extend his deal.

The 28-year-old expects to put pen to paper before the new year on a deal which will see his wages bumped up.

Barcelona were linked with a swoop for the midfielder in the summer, but Herrera wasn’t interested in a move.

Reports at the weekend suggested Mourinho and Herrera had a bust-up after the player invited a pal to United’s Carrington training ground last season.

But the MEN says there is no lingering issue between the pair.

Mourinho brought Herrera on against Everton yesterday and was delighted by the impact he had on the game.

"I think Ander was important," Mourinho said. "He gave us the stability that we were losing a little bit and then was only possible, in my view, 1-0 or 2-0, I never thought in the last 15 or 20 minutes it could be 1-1.

"The 2-0 come and after that the third and fourth goals are just a consequence of a team that was sad and another team that was happy, for me the third and fourth goal were a little bit out of context in the game."
