The award has been given every year since 2003 to the best player under the age of 21, and it is voted for by journalists from across Europe.

The nominees for this year have been announced  and they include Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters.

But the SciSkill Index, which uses statistics to assess players and gives them an indidivual rating, shows that 10 under-21 stars were better than at least 16 of the 25 nominees, but were overlooked for the shortlist.

Everton, Leicester, Real Madrid and AC Milan youngsters were among those the SciSkill Index believes were unlucky to miss out.
