The France international was tipped to swap La Liga for the Premier League this summer after emerging as Jose Mourinho"s top attacking target.

But that move failed to materialise after he decided to stay put when Atletico"s transfer ban was upheld and United prioritised the purchase of a centre-forward - with Romelu Lukaku bought instead.

United apparently just shelved their plans to nab Griezmann though, rather than scrapping them entirely.

And the latest reports suggest Chelsea"s decision to let Diego Costa return to Madrid could trigger a raid on Atletico.

According to ESPN FC, sources say the Brazil-born hitman"s impending move back to Spain has increased the likelihood of United swooping for Griezmann.

The former Real Sociedad flier will be available for about £88m next summer because the €100m release clause was retained in his new contract.

The fact that United can pay a buyout fee means Atletico"s wishes are inconsequential if he wants to leave.

However, they can sign players again from January so may give Griezmann their blessing to go at the end of the season.

Antoine Griezmann decided to stick with Atletico Madrid when their transfer ban was upheld
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho remains a keen admirer of French forward Antoine Griezmann

United and Griezmann are said to remain admirers of each other.

And that may have been helped by Old Trafford chiefs leaving the door open for the 26-year-old to join them.

Griezmann was known to fancy the prospect of testing himself in the Premier League, as well as challenging for the Champions League again.

So United"s hopes of securing his services could rest on them finishing in the top four come May.
