Brazilian midfielder Fernando whipped in a free-kick on 23 minutes to give the hosts a lead, but his compatriot Philippe Coutinho turned on the flair to slot home following a classy move by the Reds just eight minutes later.

The result leaves Jurgen Klopp’s men in second place in Champions League Group E, two points behind Sevilla, who beat Maribor 3-0 at home last night.

The Russian champions are level on points with Liverpool, but a place behind on goals scored, with Slovenian club Maribor propping up the table with a single point.

Klopp’s attention now turns to Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle, where he will be hoping for a rare clean sheet.
