The former Red Devils captain claimed he and Class of ’92 pal Scholes would look for ways to relax and unwind after a game – and stumbled upon inspiration from French defender Laurent Blanc.
Blanc – who spent two seasons at Old Trafford before retiring in 2003 – forged a close friendship with United keeper Fabian Barthez during his spell in the north west.
And Neville claims the French duo used to enjoy a post-match tipple – along with a cigarette – following most games.
“We saw him [Blanc] having a beer after a game once,” Neville explained.
“[They] were in the toilet after the game having a fag and then having a beer in the coach on the way home.
“He said ‘you’re allowed two. Two relaxes the muscles’.
“So basically from that moment on, we’d give ourselves two beers. If a World Cup-winner says you can have two beers to relax your muscles you can can’t you,” the 42-year-old giggled.
He added: “We used to have two beers after every match. It was a good period actually.”
United are set to take on CSKA Moscow later this evening as they continue their Champions League campaign with a difficult away game in Russia.
The club have also reportedly been rocked by news that David De Gea is set to refuse the offer of a new contract in order to force through a move to Real Madrid.
