Manchester United’s forward shone in their 4-1 win over CSKA Moscow in Russia.

The France international played on the left of a three-man forward line alongside Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Mourinho’s 3-4-3 formation worked wonders for Martial as he terrorised CSKA’s defence.

The 21-year-old set up Lukaku with a cross for United’s early opener before scoring from the penalty spot himself.

Martial also played a key role in United’s fourth as his shot was parried into the path of Mkhitaryan.

With Crystal Palace visiting Old Trafford on Saturday (3pm), Martial was substituted for Marcus Rashford on 72 minutes.

And Mourinho admitted afterwards he had hoped to give in-form Martial a full game in their Champions League clash.

"I think the game also adapted to his qualities," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"The way we played adapted to his qualities too, so he had lots of freedom and lots of support and quality around him too and I am happy.

"A goal is always important even on a penalty but his contribution was very good.

“A pity he couldn’t play for 90 minutes because I was ready let him play the whole game.

"We start so strong, I think we surprised them with our attitude and we killed the game.

“They didn’t look as good as they are because of us."

Martial now has five goals in all competitions for Manchester United already this season, despite regularly coming off the bench.

He may earn a starting role now, though, for the Palace off the back of his solid performance in Russia.
