The former Crystal Palace forward was the Magpies' top scorer last season, as they returned to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Gayle was expected to lead the line for Newcastle in the Premier League this term but has found himself on the bench in recent weeks, struggling to oust Joselu for a place in the starting line-up.

The 26-year-old almost left Tyneside on deadline day, as a host of Championship clubs vied for his signature.

But after impressing for United's under-23 team, managed by Beardsley, the former striker is confident he will soon be back to his best.

“To be fair to Dwight he played in the Championship last season which is not easy, but to get the goals he got and be injured for the time he was is amazing," he told the Chronicle.

“He will come good again.

“But he needs to get his sharpness and get back to normal.

“He’s had a hamstring injury from the start of the season.

“There will be an important point where he becomes part of the team again.”

And Beardsley went one step further by comparing him to former team-mate and ex-Newcastle and Manchester United superstar Andy Cole.

“Dwight likes a certain type of delivery," he added.

“He wants to make his runs and wants the ball.

“That’s what Andy Cole was like, they’re very similar.

“I wish I’d have been played with Dwight Gayle.

“He would have scored goals playing with me."

Newcastle take on Liverpool this weekend, where Gayle will be up against Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic for a place in the starting XI.
