The injury-prone midfielder played a full 90 minutes for the Gunners against BATE Borisov – only the second time he has done so since September 2014.

And he looked back to his best for Arsene Wenger’s side during their 4-2 victory.

The 25-year-old was pivotal for Theo Walcott’s opener, playing a clever one-two with Olivier Giroud before firing a perfect ball across goal.

He was full of confidence throughout, highlighted with an outrageous touch in the first half.

Ex-Gunners star Martin Keown praised Wilshere’s “star quality” after the match, adding that he could replace Granit Xhaka in the starting line-up.

But Arsenal fans went one step further after watching his impressive highlight reel.

“Wilshere is the English Zidane! What a touch!” one wrote.

Another added: “Zidane got some posters of Jack Wilshere in his room.”

While a third commented: “Is that Jack Wilshere on the pitch or Zidane... I am not understanding.”

Some viewers, however, were quick to point out the level of opponents Arsenal faced.

“Incredible hyping up of Wilshere,” one wrote. “Some comparing him to Zidane, some to a phoenix. Relax folks, the real test hasn’t begun yet.”

It wasn’t just pundits and fans who praised the England international’s display.

Wenger said after the match that Wilshere “is on a good way back to his best”.
