And the Reds legend wishes his old club had conducted their summer spending more like how Manchester United did.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are seven points behind the Manchester giants at the top of the Premier League table after this season’s first seven games.

The Anfield giants were frustrated into a 1-1 draw at Newcastle today with Klopp cutting an angry figure after that result.

Carragher says Liverpool should have signed a top quality striker in the summer and sorted out their problems like United did when they snapped up Romelu Lukaku.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “Do I think Liverpool are a title challenger this season? Did I think that at the start of the season? Possibly not.

“I saw the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Spurs, possibly with the money that’s been spent or the players that have been brought in, I always thought Liverpool would be in a fight for the top four this season.

“Liverpool’s transfer window didn’t go well.

“You think of watching Liverpool in these first seven games, and it’s still early, but you take it back to Manchester United last season in terms of having a lot of games where they didn’t score and had lots of chances.

“At the end of the season they just went and bought Lukaku and it looks like that problem at the moment is fixed.

“I still look at Liverpool and think they didn’t fix the problems in the summer that needed fixing. That is the big problem.

“I just feel whenever I do a Liverpool game, I’m going to be saying the same thing.

“Klopp’s getting the same questions, I’m giving the same answers and I think it always goes back to what happened in the transfer window.”

Things do not get any easier for Liverpool with Klopp and co facing a clash against United after the international break.
