The Reds missed a host of chances in yesterday’s frustrating draw at Newcastle, which saw Daniel Sturridge handed a start in place of the misfiring Roberto Firmino.

Sturridge struggled against a resilient Newcastle and according to Pearce they’ll fall behind without the potent goalscoring threat their rivals possess, despite the strength of their midfield.

“That would be the thing that he (Jurgen Klopp) and probably I are scratching my head with,” he said.

“When you look at the array of talent they’ve got up front, their strikeforce or combination strikeforce, is as good as anything in the league, within reason.

“But they’ve not got an individual at this moment in time who has looked clinical in front of goal, like Harry Kane, (or Romelu) Lukaku.

“When you look at other teams in and around them, they’ve got a striker who hits the back of the net, give him one chance and he will score one goal.

“Liverpool are creating the chances which is a real plus, but they’re failing to hit the back of the net.”

Firmino has scored four times this season but hasn’t found the net in the league since August.

Sturridge scored 21 goals in 2013/14, forming a devastating partnership with Luis Suarez, but the England international has been plagued by injuries and has scored just 16 league goals in the last three years.

Liverpool have won just once in their last seven games in all competitions and face their in-form rivals Manchester United at Anfield after the international break.
