Alvaro Morata has withdrawn from the Spain squad after picking up a hamstring injury against Manchester City.

The striker limped off during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side on Saturday afternoon.

Morata, 24, underwent tests on his hamstring in Madrid today, with doctors confirming he has a grade II hamstring problem.

Blues boss Antonio Conte was adamant that he won’t play for his country in their two World Cup qualifiers.

“It’s a muscular problem,” said Conte.

“I don’t think it’s a serious problem because he stopped. He said he would prefer to stop and not risk a bad injury.

“The doctor now has to check the situation but I don’t think he’s available for the national team.”

Chelsea regretted sacking Carlo Ancelotti in 2011 and he could return to Stamford Bridge, Telegraph journalist Sam Wallace claims.

Conte has been linked with a Blues exit this season despite winning the Premier League title last campaign.

Ancelotti was sacked by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last week and is available to return to Chelsea.

And Wallace says Ancelotti could replace Conte at Stamford Bridge this season.

He said: ”Ancelotti has pretty much been panned in Germany as tactically not up to managing their great club [Bayern].

"The mistake Chelsea always felt was that they were too trigger happy with Ancelotti, sacking him the season after he won the double.

"If Conte doesn't last until the end of the season, which is incredible to say, would Ancelotti come back in the middle of the season? Stranger things have happened.

"They need someone who is out of work and ready to step in. It would be really interesting seeing him back at Chelsea.

"The fact is Chelsea have sacked so many managers that they will have to start employing ones they have already had, as they did with Mourinho."

Stuart Pearce has slammed Willian for his performance against City on Saturday.

The Brazil winger replaced Morata in the defeat and Sky Sports pundit Pearce says Willian didn’t contribute for the Blues.

“Willian, as the game went on, got worse and worse to be fair,” said Pearce.

“It was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen him play.

“He didn’t contribute to the team effort in dominating the ball in midfield.”
