The Three Lions are on the brink qualifying for the finals in Russia and will book their place with a win over Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday.

Manchester United striker Rashford believes Gareth Southgate’s men can win the biggest prize in football.

“We are doing our best to go there with a real plan and intensity to try and win the tournament,” said Rashford.

“We are realistic, even with how we are playing against these teams in the qualifiers.

“But then we have to build our own plan once we get to the World Cup to try and win it.”

England have a dreadful record at recent major tournaments.

They crashed out of the group stages of the last World Cup in Brazil after just two games and were knocked out of Euro 2016 by minnows Iceland in the last 16 - forcing boss Roy Hodgson to quit.

England legend and 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton met the current squad yesterday at a ceremony to name a training pitch at St George’s Park after him.

The World Cup winner broke down in tears in an emotional address to the players saying: “The World Cup is the big thing. It’s the end product of everything that you ever want to do and you can do it for us.

“I hope that in this particular year, we get the opportunity to have another go at winning the World Cup.

“I know that the manager has the ability and I do hope that you can give me one of the greatest memories of my life.”

Rashford, 19, reckons the current squad can take inspiration from Sir Bobby, who will celebrate his 80th birthday next week.

“Someone who has won it before, well that’s the biggest inspiration we can have as players,” he said.

“What he says to us and the information he gives us and the memories, these are things no-one else can give to us.

“We’ve had him at United for years, but just having little conversations with him and seeing him around the place, it can give us all a big boost.”

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has been handed his first senior England call-up after Manchester City’s Fabian Delph pulled out of the squad with a muscle strain.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones will also not feature against Slovenia or Lithuania after missing training yesterday with an ankle injury.
