The Red Devils are looking to add seats in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand to take the capacity from 75,643 to 88,000.

United already boast the biggest Premier League ground in Britain but this would take Old Trafford very close to the 90,000 Wembley can hold.

If the expansion takes place the stadium would overtake a number of others in terms of capacity.

Old Trafford would be bigger than the Bernabeu, the San Siro and the Stade de France.

In the future a safe-standing area could further expand the ground, but that remains some way off with clubs still working on an agreement.

Jose Mourinho has criticised the Old Trafford atmosphere in the past.

Back in May he was unhappy with the noise levels saying they were not consistent for United games when they were playing at home.

Stadium security is also set to be increased with a crackdown on ticket touts and fans who bring flares to matches planned.

2,000 tickets have been seized since last season and the current penalty for anyone reselling is a three-year ban.

Unite’s next home match at Old Trafford is not until Saturday, October 28 when Mourinho’s men face off against Tottenham.

Before then the Red Devils face arch rivals Liverpool, Benfica, Huddersfield and Swansea away.
