That’s according to former Reds star and pundit Steve Nicol.

Liverpool are already seven points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after just seven games.

And Nicol says Klopp could be axed by the Reds if they fail to qualify for the Champions League in 2018/2019.

“No (he shouldn’t get sacked at the end of the season),” Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“But I would suggest that the following season, if it’s the same thing, then yes (he should get sacked).”

“Yes (I’d give him 18 months).”

Nicol also slammed Liverpool’s defence, claiming they are no better than they were two years ago under Brendan Rodgers.

“How many times have I said this?” Nicol added.

“Going forward yes (they have improved). No question. Defensively no.”

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk this summer.

However, the Reds pulled out of the race after being accused of tapping up the Dutch defender, 26.

Liverpool may renew their interest in the former Celtic star in January, with Van Dijk revealing he hopes to discuss a Southampton exit when the transfer window opens.
