Liverpool star Emre Can has been linked with a move to Juventus

The Germany midfielder is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and shows no sign of agreeing a new contract.

Can, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for £9.75m in 2014, will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in January.

Juventus chief executive Beppe Marotta has admitted he made an offer for Can in August – only for Liverpool to turn it down.

Can said: “It’s always an honour to receive an offer from such a renowned club, but currently I am only focused on the season with Liverpool. My agent takes care of the rest.”

The midfielder will turn 24 in January, meaning that Liverpool risk losing him for nothing if his deal runs out without a new one in place.

Can is understood to want a release clause inserted into any new deal at Anfield, something that club officials have so far been unwilling to agree to.

They are wary of such a clause – particularly as there was one in his Leverkusen contract that enabled Liverpool to sign him three years ago.

Can is a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s team, having made nine appearances this season, and was impressive on Sunday night as Germany ended their World Cup qualifying campaign in style.

He scored a stunning first international goal as Azerbaijan were defeated 5-1 in Kaiserslautern to ensure that Joachim Low’s men ended their campaign with 10 wins out of 10.

Despite the uncertainty over his future, Can has hinted that he could yet be tempted to stay in England.

He said: “The Premier League is just a really cool league, the most interesting in the world, but you must always respect other big clubs and leagues.

“You never know what will happen. And I don’t know what Jurgen Klopp plans.”

Marotta, meanwhile, has indicated that any deal for Can will have to wait until next summer, as he believes there is no chance of getting the player to Italy in January.

“We don’t think we are going to make a big signing in January,” the chief executive said.

“Our team is absolutely competitive and we have some very interesting midfielders like Rodrigo Bentancur who has already showed his qualities.

“We have faith in this team and in these lads. As for Emre Can, I don’t think Liverpool will sell him in January.

“We made an offer for him in the summer but they didn’t sell him so I don’t think they’ll change their mind in the middle of the season.”
