That’s according to former player turned pundit Chris Sutton who reckons ditching Wembley would give the players a lift.

The Three Lions have booked their place at next year’s World Cup in Russia.

But they ended an underwhelming qualifying campaign with dismal 1-0 victories over Slovenia and Lithuania.

The decisive triumph over Slovenia was watched by a relatively small and disinterested crowd in London.

And Sutton wants the England team to tour the country in a bid to gee up the players.

“Playing in front of swathes of empty seats at Wembley is never a good look,” he told the Daily Mail.

“We should be going to St James' Park, Anfield and Old Trafford, and sparking the interest of supporters around the country.”

Sutton says England haven’t learned from their humiliating showing at Euro 2016 in France.

Having disappointed in qualifying, the former striker doesn’t expect Gareth Southgate’s men to make waves on the big stage.

“This qualifying campaign has only papered over the cracks,” he added.

“As things stand, England have no chance in Russia.

“If Roy Hodgson was still in charge, he'd be getting pummelled for how poorly England have played.

“The England manager needs to assert his authority in the coming months and give supporters hope that the summer will not be yet another write-off.”

England face Germany on November 10 and Brazil four days later as they warm up for the World Cup.
