The Portuguese arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016 after penning a three-year deal.

An extension has been in the pipeline with United keen to not let Mourinho start next season without his future being sorted.

The United manager has enjoyed a successful first 15 months in charge.

Mourinho has helped establish the Red Devils as a real force in the Premier League again.

After winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League last term, United are back in Champions League action too.

While fans are keen to see the 54-year-old stay long term, it does not appear he wants to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26 years at the helm.

In the wake of yesterday’s 0-0 draw at Liverpool, the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss has admitted he has more than United on his mind.

"The only thing I can say is that I am still a coach with worries, ambitions, desires to do new things,” Mourinho told Telefoot.

"I'm sure I will not finish my career here [in Manchester]."

Mourinho has expressed a desire to extend his contract at Manchester United.

However, his longest spell as manager of any club during his career was only just over three years - his first stint at Chelsea.

Whether he goes beyond that with United remains to be seen.
