Lionel Messi couldn’t believe Ernesto Valverde’s decision to play Andre Gomes against Atletico

Barcelona earned a point against Atletico last night thanks to a late Suarez goal as the clash finished 1-1.

The former Liverpool ace stunned the Wanda Metropolitano faithful to maintain Barca’s fine start to the season.

Valverde’s men have now won seven and drawn one of their opening eight La Liga clashes.

However, according to Spanish outlet Diario Gol, the Barca changing room were not happy with Valverde last night.

They say Nou Camp stars Messi and Suarez were bemused as to why Valverde started Gomes against Atletico.

The Portugal international has failed to impress since joining from Valencia in 2016.

Gomes, 24, started his first La Liga game last night, making his sixth appearance in all competitions this season.

And Messi couldn’t believe Valverde’s decision, especially with Denis Suarez on the bench.

Speaking after the game, Barca boss Valverde hailed Messi, saying: "It's true that Leo had some wear and tear because of the tension of the matches he has had to play, but we know that he always responds in any situation.

"He gave us a lot of effort and it was clear that when he got the ball, something good could happen for us.

"We know how much fear he instils in the opposing players and fans."
