The 24-year-old had been enjoying a productive start to the season at Old Trafford prior to his hamstring injury.

Under Mourinho, Pogba begun the new campaign with more freedom playing further forward than he did last term.

In his first year back at United following his huge £89m move, he was deployed in holding midfield.

That saw Pogba struggle to make a big impression, but playing behind Romelu Lukaku he has flourished.

For France, though, he continues to be selected in defensive midfield partnering the likes of Blaise Matuidi and N’Golo Kante due to France’s array of attacking talents to choose from.

As a result, Mourinho feels he is more comfortable in a United shirt than a France one at present.

And the Red Devils boss has high hopes for the former Juventus man to become a true legend of the game.

"He can make football history," Mourinho told Telefoot. "He has talent.

"We have the balance in midfield to occupy space better [this season].

“[Partnered] with Matuidi [in the France team], I think he isn't happy."

Pogba’s injured his hamstring in mid-September against Basel in the Champions League.

But despite initial fears he could be out for up to 12 weeks, Manchester United are reportedly hopeful Pogba will be fit to face Swansea in the Carabao Cup later this month.

As a result, he should feature for France in the November international break.

Mourinho added: "I do not know when he will be back but it will not be tomorrow."
