The Red Devils boss forged a reputation for himself as a master tactician in the big games during his two title-winning spells at Chelsea.

But in recent years, he has struggled to find a way to win against top of the table opposition – as former Liverpool defender Carragher showed in a surprising graph on Monday Night Football.

Mourinho’s teams have scored just one goal in nine games away from home against top six opposition since 2015, failing to register a win in his previous 10 outings.

A dour 0-0 against free-scoring Liverpool this weekend illustrated the plight of the Portuguese gaffer as his team looked comfortable in defence, yet offered absolutely nothing in the final third.

"I go back to when Peter Schmeichel was winning titles with Manchester United and they possibly had six big games – Liverpool home and away, Arsenal home and away and someone else challenging, whether it was Chelsea or Newcastle,” Carragher ranted.

"That's 18 points. With the top six now that's 30 points. That's a big part of the season. You've got 10 games home and away.

"If that doesn't improve they won't win the league and that's when the criticism will come.

"I won't criticise him for the way he played at Anfield because you can still win a game playing like that – but if those results continue I think it will be very difficult to win the title."

It comes after news that Danny Ings’ injury-ravaged spell on Merseyside could be coming to an end, with both Everton and Newcastle rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services in January.
