Free-scoring Manchester United adopted a more defensive approach as they ground out a goalless draw away at Liverpool and Wright believes the Portuguese played for a point.

But the former Arsenal striker pointed out that Crystal Palace’s shock win over champions Chelsea shows that anything can happen.

“Why is Mourinho coming out and saying ‘I was expecting them to take off a couple of people so I would be able to do this’?” he said.

“Why is he making excuses for? Why is he making excuses?

"If he thinks that is a good point then he should say that’s a good point. I think that is what he should have said.

“If you’re going to start picking points that you’re going to get, and I think they had a good opportunity to go to Liverpool and beat them, we saw what happened to Chelsea if you’re not on it.

“Palace, hadn’t won in seven, hadn’t scored a goal, they beat them.

“You can’t take anyone for granted in this league.

“You have to beat the teams with the form you’re going into the game with.

“That’s the difference with Pep (Guardiola). Look what (Manchester) City did to Stoke.”

The draw with Liverpool leaves Mourinho’s side second in the league, two points behind table-topping rivals City.

United travel to Benfica tonight hoping to make it three wins in as many Champions League games, before they take on Huddersfield on Saturday.
