Jose Mourinho’s side are unbeaten so far this season and are currently second in the Premier League, two points behind their rivals.

City have been unstoppable so far, winning all but one of their games and scoring 29 goals in the process.

Keane won seven Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford and his comments would have raised a few eyebrows before he explained himself.

"It will suit the United camp at the moment to let City get all the credit at the moment," he said.

"United are in a sense under the radar, but they are getting results and clean sheets.

“That gives you the foundations to get trophies."

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, with their last title coming in 2013, but they are among the favourites to lift the trophy in May.

Manchester City last won it three years ago but are more solid under Pep Guardiola this year.

Both sides are top of their group in the Champions League having won all three matches so far.

They return to Premier League action this weekend, as United travel to Huddersfield, while City host Burnley at the Etihad.
