Barcelona have enjoyed a stunning start to the season as they sit four points clear at the top of La Liga - undefeated in their eight outings.

But Barca boss Ernesto Valverde is reportedly already looking for potential recruits to strengthen his side in January.

And according to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, Barca have set their sights on Manchester United midfielder Herrera.

The Catalan giants are said to consider the 28-year-old as the long-term replacement for 33-year-old Andreas Iniesta, who recently signed a new ‘lifetime contract’.

Herrera has struggled for game time at Old Trafford this season since the arrival of Nemanja Matic, starting just two Premier League games.

And with Spain’s World Cup squad next year in mind, the former Athletic Bilbao may be tempted to find first-team football elsewhere in January.

Herrera last month played down the possibility of leaving United in January, claiming he still feels valued under Jose Mourinho despite his limited game time.

“I feel as important as I did last season,” he said.

“I am a team player and I always say that and if the manager decides to keep me on the bench I will be ready.

“I said that last season and it is the same now. I know how lucky I am to play for Manchester United.

“I will try to enjoy every minute I have on the pitch.

“I want to win titles and feel part of the team and feel important and I really do feel important because the manager makes me feel important.”
