The Red Devils’ record goalscorer left for Everton in the summer, but he arrived yesterday about half an hour before his old pals.

Rooney had business to attend to at the hotel - believed to be a charity shirt signing - while the United squad were there preparing for today’s trip to Huddersfield.

United regularly meet at the Lowry Hotel - where boss Jose Mourinho still lives - prior to home matches and short distance away games.

The short trip to Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium will be a new experience for Mourinho’s men - and in fact it is the first time the two clubs have met in any competition since 1972.

The match kicks off at 3pm, and a victory could send United top of the table if Burnley manage to shock Manchester City at the Etihad.
