The midfielder’s current contract expires at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

And that has alerted Barcelona, who are keen to swoop for the Spaniard.

However, United have remained confident of keeping Herrera in Manchester.

And according to TransferMarketWeb, the 28-year-old is about to have his contract officially extended.

Herrera was crowned United’s Player of the Year in Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge.

Despite his game time being limited this term, the former Athletic Bilbao star remains an important figure at the club.

In the absence of Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini, Herrera has become a more prominent player in the team again.

And Mourinho is keen not to lose him to Barcelona.

While an extension is on its way, it remains to be seen how long a deal Herrera is set to get.

Reports have claimed Manchester United have the option to extend Herrera’s contract by 12 months in case they fail to reach an agreement.

But it appears they are close to finalising his stay.

Last month, United's Herrera said: “I feel as important as I did last season.

“I know how lucky I am to play for Manchester United.”
