The Toffees axed Koeman after 16 months in charge this afternoon with the club down in 18th in the Premier League.

But Osman believes the Dutchman was always going to face a tough task following the sale of Lukaku for £75m to Manchester United.

He told Sky Sports: "Having someone like Lukaku up front last season and then using him has been a big thing.

"Not just because of one player but it’s sort of changed Ronald Koeman’s style of play.

"Everton have had to adapt to a completely different style this season.

"He’s brought in a number of players to try and find a new way of playing but the fact he brought in so many players in such a short space of time and put them all in the first team, it was very difficult for it to work.

"Players need to be brought in slowly to understand how a club works and what it takes to play for a club like Everton. This season he’s had 10 new players playing at one time."

On who the next manager should be Osman thinks Everton should consider bringing David Moyes back to the club.

He added: “I think Moyes would be able to do a good job immediately. He knows the club side and out.

“Whether he would be a long-term candidate, I don’t know what the chairman is looking at.”

“If he’s looking at immediate results or someone who has a real pedigree of winning trophies.

“Or are they looking at someone like David Unsworth from the academy, who really knows the club and who can bring the young lads through and inspire an Everton core.

“So it’s really interesting to see what Moshiri and Bell Kenwright are thinking right now.”

Everton return to action on Wednesday evening against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge.

After that the Toffees travel to Leicester in the Premier League.
