Arsenal vs. Manchester United to be refereed by Andre Marriner

Referee Andre Marriner has been selected to take charge of Sunday's match between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, the Premier League has announced.

Marriner has officiated four matches for each of those two clubs so far this season, including the reverse fixture at Old Trafford back in November.

The West Midlands official oversaw a 1-1 draw on Nov. 19 in which Olivier Giroud's late equaliser cancelled out Juan Mata's opener midway through the second half. Marriner had waved away appeals for a first-half penalty when Arsenal's Nacho Monreal appeared to haul Antonio Valencia down in the area, but after the match United manager Jose Mourinho refused to condemn the official.

Mourinho said at the time: "I don't want to speak about it," Mourinho said. "He is the kind of ref that if he makes mistakes with my team there is no intention. I remember his words before the game, 'I don't want to be seen, I want to do my work the best I can' and he's right -- he doesn't want to be a star. He wants to be an honest man and a good ref.

"I know because I've watched on video a few times but I don't want to say whether it was a mistake or not because he is a good ref."

Mourinho has had a previous run-in with Marriner, in January 2015 when he complained repeatedly to him as fourth official during Chelsea's defeat at Tottenham Hotspur after referee Phil Dowd had failed to give a penalty.

The 46-year-old, who has been a Premier League official since 2004 and on FIFA's panel since 2009, was also in charge for United's EFL Cup final triumph over Southampton on Feb. 26.

Marriner's most recent Arsenal match was the 2-2 home draw against Manchester City on April 2.

In March 2014, he famously sent off Kieran Gibbs instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for handball on the goal line during Arsenal's 6-0 defeat at Chelsea.
