David Unsworth: I need two wins from two to stand chance with Everton job

Everton caretaker boss David Unsworth says he will need to win the next two games if he is to have a chance of being appointed on a full-time basis.

Former Everton player Unsworth was named caretaker manager last month following the dismissal of Ronald Koeman, but has since overseen a 2-1 Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea and 2-0 Premier League defeat to Leicester.

Everton next take on Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday and Watford in the Premier League on Sunday, and Unsworth believes he will need two positive results if he is hoping to see off competition for the job from bookmakers' favourites Sean Dyche and Sam Allardyce.

"Do I need to win the next two games? Probably," Unsworth told a news conference. "I've been in football a long time, you have to get results, so we need to start winning. But that doesn't scare me.

"I've not looked at the other names linked. I've heard one or two people say a few things, but whoever has been linked with the job, it won't surprise me because this is a wonderful club.

"I've not been put off by anything about this job since I took it on. It's an amazing club and this is a fabulous job for any manager."

When asked what more had been said to him about the possibility of becoming Koeman's permanent successor, Unsworth said: "Nothing more.

"I've spoken to the chairman [Bill Kenwright] two or three times every day and I spoke to Farhad [Moshiri, Everton's major shareholder] last Friday, and nothing more has been said.

"We just carry on day by day, game by game. Hopefully we'll be able to sit down after Sunday's game, in the international break. What we want is the best resolution for Everton Football Club, and I certainly want that myself.

"I haven't had time to look or see whoever is being linked with the job. I'm just working so hard with the staff and the players to try to win some football matches, and that is my only focus."

Unsworth, meanwhile, has stressed Everton can still make the round of 32 of the Europa League.

Everton go into Thursday's match at Lyon lying bottom of Group E with just one point from three games, and if they lose and Atalanta avoid defeat at Apollon Limassol, their hopes of qualifying for the next round will be over.

Unsworth said: "We've got an uphill task but it's not impossible, and when something is not impossible, we go for it. I certainly want to go for it tomorrow and win the game, and hopefully we can win the last two games as well. We're really looking forward to the game and I can assure you we will be giving it everything to win it."

Unsworth has opted to rest Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka for Thursday's match.
