On a tour of India as part of a Premier League 'live event', Robert Pires has confirmed what Cesc Fabregas said on air earlier this month about the 2004 Pizzagate controversy.

"Yes, it was Cesc, he threw the pizza at Alex Ferguson," Pires told ESPN in Bengaluru.

Pires took the questions thrown at him at the Puma 100ft Store -- about the Invincibles' 2003-04 season, Arsene Wenger and his journey in the Indian Super League (ISL) -- with a smile and a bit of banter directed at Gary Neville.

Asked who was the worst defender he played against, he smiled before saying, "I have to say Gary Neville. The best defender? It was Tony Adams."

Pires is part of a group, which includes the Premier League's all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer, that is visiting the country to promote the league. As part of a two-day fan park event, EPL games will be shown on a big screen and about 20,000 fans are expected to gather in an open field in Bengaluru on Saturday and Sunday.

Pires last played professional football in the ISL in 2014 and has since been an ambassador for Arsenal. The ISL, now in its fourth season and with the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Wes Brown set to play this year, has become a bigger tournament and Pires says it was important for him to be a part of it to help football grow in India. "For me it was very important to play in the first edition of the ISL," he said. "When you have ex-players, you have a role [model] for the country, for the football, for the young players. I think now it's not perfect but you can grow."

Pires was optimistic about Arsenal's shot at the Premier League title this season, even though there has been speculation about the departure of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. "Well, you know I'm an Arsenal fan," he said. "I believe in this season and this squad. With this team I think we can win the title. We are just six points behind Manchester United and City. The road is very long, but I think it's possible."
