Jurgen Klopp waiting on Coutinho, Lovren fitness ahead of Maribor tie

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp says he is "not sure" whether Philippe Coutinho and Dejan Lovren will be fit to play in Liverpool's Champions League tie with Maribor on Wednesday.

Coutinho missed Saturday's 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town with an adductor injury, while Lovren sustained an issue with his thigh during the prematch warm-up.

Klopp hopes the pair will be able to feature in training at Melwood on Tuesday evening, but stated that they would not necessarily be ruled out of the Anfield encounter if they did not train.

"I'm not 100 percent sure," Klopp told a news conference. "Both of them are much better, but if they will be OK for tomorrow night, I don't know in this moment.

"We have to see. Our session is at 5 p.m. and we will see who will be involved then. In this moment, I actually hope both will be involved in the session. That would at least give us the opportunity.

"If they would not train, especially in Dejan's case, it does not mean immediately that he cannot play."

Klopp has already confirmed to the club's official website that Loris Karius will keep his place as starting goalkeeper in the Champions League.

The Liverpool manager is carefully monitoring the fitness of Alberto Moreno and Joe Gomez after picking up knocks on Saturday, but said he was not considering making wholesale changes as a result of the club's record-breaking 7-0 win over the Slovenian side in their last meeting earlier this month.

"We have a few little things after the game. Alberto had a little bit of a cramp, Joe felt [it] a little bit," Klopp added. "We were really careful in the last two days. Tonight and probably the first thing tomorrow morning will be the first time I really think about the lineup and then I know who is available.

"I never take risks with lineups. If a player is playing then we expect him at 100 percent, so that's clear. If he tells me, 'I have a problem here or there,' then it's only one talk with the medical department -- what does it mean? If you feel a bruise or a knock somewhere -- that's not a problem. When muscles are involved then we never take risks.

"I don't think about rotation. I think about a 100 percent, spot-on team tomorrow night. That's all. We will line up tomorrow with the strongest side.

"I know what people think after results like this. Respect is a big problem in general and after 7-0 maybe people wouldn't respect Maribor, but we know how strong they can be if we let them be. This result is not even one percent of our analysis. Maybe it's a challenge for a lot of people to be 100 percent spot on and my job is to make sure we are 100 percent spot on.

"We want to win this game -- that's 100 percent clear. If we win 1-0 then I'm fine. We want to have three points, a clean sheet and a better position after the game than we have now. That's all."

Klopp did not take questions about the threats made to Lovren's family on social media as he intends to speak to the player when he reports to Melwood later on.

Meanwhile, James Milner recalled how he was "delighted" after being informed he would return to a midfield role with Liverpool this season.

Milner operated as a makeshift left-back last season, but has started Liverpool's last three matches in central midfield.

"Last season I was asked to do a job and I did that as best as I could," Milner told a news conference. "I said at the time I didn't enjoy playing there -- I didn't like it -- but the team comes first and you always do what's asked of you. That's always the case.

"I'm definitely enjoying my football again in midfield. I just want to get out there and contribute to the side. At the start of the season, the manager pulled me in and said he's looking at me more in the midfield, which I was delighted with. I didn't play too much after that, but it's down to me to force my way into the team."
