Ander Herrera: Man United must improve to win the Premier League title

OSLO, Norway -- Ander Herrera has told his Manchester United teammates they must challenge for the Premier League title this season.

United have not been in contention at the business end of the campaign since Sir Alex Ferguson guided the club to their 20th title in 2013.

The best they have managed since is fourth place under Louis van Gaal in 2015, and Herrera accepts the pressure will be on this season.

Speaking after the 3-0 friendly win over Valerenga in Oslo on Sunday, the midfielder said: "I know we have to improve in the Premier League, but we were the only team to win three pieces of silverware last season so we have to say that as well.

"In the Premier League we have to improve, we want to fight for the title, but we know it's not going to be easy to repeat the three titles."

Herrera missed the final game of United's tour of the United States against Barcelona with a hip injury but returned to play the second 45 minutes against Valerenga.

United face Sampdoria in Dublin on Wednesday before they play for the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid on Aug. 8.

Matic, who is expected to sign from Chelsea, is in line to make his debut against the European champions in Macedonia and Herrera is ready to play his part, too.

He added: "I'm good. It was OK because it was not so painful, just a kick on my hip. The first two days I was really bad but now I'm better again and feel that I can play more than 45 minutes. I'm happy, but now we have to be ready for the UEFA Super Cup, which is another title to fight for."

United youngster Scott McTominay got his first senior goal in Norway, completing the scoring against Valerenga after goals from Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku.

The 20-year-old has been part of the first-team squad since the end of last season and is set to be involved again when United play their final preseason friendly against Sampdoria.

He told MUTV: "Coming over with the first team for a start and just playing games with them in preseason and then obviously to get my first senior goal, it's the best feeling in the world.

"It's the best moment of my life so you just want more and more of this. This is what you work for every single day in training, dedicating yourself. I'm just going to enjoy it now and push forward to do my best."

United assistant manager Rui Faria says McTominay, who made two Premier League appearances last season, has a bright future.

He told MUTV: "Scott is a good professional and a talented kid, so he knows what he needs to do to have a career and a proper future. We can see that playing football is something that he loves. The tour was very important for the kid because it helps his motivation and belief."
