Harry Kane returns to Spurs training ahead of Real Madrid clash

LONDON -- Harry Kane trained outdoors with the Tottenham squad on Tuesday and will be assessed ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Kane missed Spurs' defeats to West Ham and Manchester United last week after suffering a minor hamstring strain and Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino was cautious on his chances of facing the European champions at Wembley when asked on Saturday.

But the England international trained took part in training drills on Tuesday, along with Erik Lamela, who has not played for a year due to hip problems.

Speaking at a news conference to preview the game, Pochettino said: "We're very confident [he will play] -- he's on the list. We have one more day to assess him but maybe it's possible he can play tomorrow. I don't want to say 100 percent because we have one more day. Today and yesterday was good at training. Now it's with medical staff to take the right decision.

"He was training with group and was good - at the same level as team. We must know the feeling today, after tonight and tomorrow, how he is going to feel. And many other things. We'll take the best decision for him, first of all, and then for the team."

Victor Wanyama (knee) was Spurs' only absentee. The club confirmed the midfielder "is starting fieldwork training this week as he continues his recovery."

Dele Alli is expected to make his first Champions League appearance of the season against Madrid after being banned for the first three group matches.

Pochettino said that the suspension had affected the 21-year-old but insisted Alli's best form is coming as surely as winter -- a reference to "Game of Thrones," one of the Argentine's favourite television programmes.

"It was a strange preseason, a difficult preseason for him for different reasons, and then he was banned and of course it can affect the motivation about preparing himself to compete," Pochettino said.

"Always for a player that's not involved from the beginning in a very exciting competition, you feel a little bit down. You sometimes stay here at the training ground alone, training, and it's not easy for everyone. Maybe he was affected a little bit about that.

"But now we're so happy about the way he's doing. His internal motivation is higher now to try to compete at his best level. I think the last three games that he's played, we're happy with his performances, and I think it's increasing, his level. I'm not worried about him. Maybe he's disappointed with himself that he's not at his best but it's coming -- like winter is coming."

Pochettino added: "For me, he's special but he can be better, he can improve. He only needs time. It's a short period he's playing in a professional environment, achieving a lot of things. Be sure that with time, improving every day, he will become of the best players in the world."

Despite serving the final game of his three-match ban, Alli travelled with the rest of the squad to Madrid for the 1-1 draw a fortnight ago and trained with the squad in the Santiago Bernabeu on the night before the game.

Pochettino said he was one of a number of unavailable players who wanted to travel, saying it is evidence of a shift in mentality at the club.

He said: "The good thing was many players asked me about going, to be with the team. It was not only my decision. It was my final decision to take him but many players who were injured said 'we want to stay with the team, it's a good opportunity to stay,' and that I think is so important.

"Something starts to move in the group, in the club, to feel you're part of the group and the project and everything. I think that is the last step that we need, to be stronger mentally. It's not about running more, doing more sessions, tactical or playing in a different way. I think the last step for us as a group and a club is mental, and we must work very hard to try to change everything in the future."

Spurs are level with Real on seven points at the top of their Champions League group after a 1-1 draw in Spain a fortnight ago.
