Man United, Roma, Juventus advance in Champions League

Manchester United secured their place in the Champions League round of 16 as Group A winners, but had to come from behind to beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 on Tuesday.

CSKA took a shock lead in the final minute of the first half when Vitinho's shot hit Alan Dzagoev five yards out and went into the back of the net.

Dzagoev looked to be in an offside position, but he was played onside by Daley Blind who had slid off the pitch making an attempt to cut out the ball. UEFA, however, decided to award the goal to Vitinho.

United levelled in the 65th minute when Romelu Lukaku superbly met a Paul Pogba cross and steered it past Igor Akinfeev. And seconds later the Red Devils had the lead, Juan Mata setting up Marcus Rashford to finish with an excellent first-time effort.

CSKA will finish third in the group, three points shy of Basel, who went through to the knockout stage after winning 2-0 at Benfica, losers of all six group-stage games.

Basel took the lead inside five minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi headed in Michael Lang's fine cross from the wing.

Dimitri Oberlin then made it 2-0 in the 65th minute with a diving header following a set piece.

Chelsea missed a chance to finish top of Group C after a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid, who will settle for third place and a Europa League spot.

With Roma defeating Qarabag in the other group game, the Serie A side will top the group on the head-to-head tiebreaker, while Chelsea -- already through to the knockout stage -- finish second and Atletico third, four points adrift.

With Jan Oblak's goalkeeping heroics keeping Atletico in the game, the visitors took the lead in the 56th minute later as Koke sent in a corner kick that was expertly headed on by Fernando Torres to Saul, who could not miss.

The equaliser came following a corner, the ball coming out to Hazard, who put a shot towards goal that struck Stefan Savic before entering the net for an own goal.

Willian had an opportunity to net a winner when the ball came to him in the closing stages, but he mis-hit it high and wide.

Roma advanced as Group C winners as Diego Perotti's goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win over minnows Qarabag.

Perotti played Edin Dzeko in on goal in the 53rd minute, and though the striker's shot was saved, the ball looped high into the air and Perotti was able to race forward and head it over the line.

Qarabag almost levelled seven minutes from time when Wilde Donald Guerrier crossed for an unmarked Michel but he headed straight at Roma goalkeeper Alisson.

Juventus advanced to the round of 16 as runners-up in Group D by managing a 2-0 win away to Olympiakos.

Blaise Matuidi sent a long ball over the top to Alex Sandro, who picked out Cuadrado in the box for a simple tap-in to put the visitors ahead in the 15th minute, before Federico Bernardeschi wrapped up matters in the 90th minute.

Barcelona, already assured of finishing top in the group, earned a 2-0 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Starting in place of the rested Lionel Messi on the bench, Paco Alcacer scored the opening goal in the 59th minute with an angled header following a corner kick, and a late own goal from former Barca man Jeremy Mathieu sealed it.

Sporting needed to win and hope Juventus dropped points to finish second, but it was not to be and they will instead go to the Europa League.

Paris Saint-Germain secured their place as Group B winners despite a 3-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich.

With both teams already qualified for the round of 16, Bayern needed to win by at least four goals to have a chance to win the group, and it appeared to be game on as Robert Lewandowski and Corentin Tolisso scored in the first half, but Kylian Mbappe responded soon after the break to erase any doubt.

Lewandowski buried a headed Kingsley Coman pass past Alphonse Areola to give the Bundesliga champions a 1-0 lead, and right before half-time, Bayern would go two up when Tolisso smashed a header past Areola from a perfectly curled James Rodriguez cross from the left flank.

But Unai Emery's team scored an important goal to open the second half as Edinson Cavani scooped a pass in the penalty area for Mbappe to head home to make it 2-1 in favour of the Germans.

Tolisso then bagged his brace right before 70 minutes on a swift-hitting counter-attack from Bayern Munich, firing a first-time shot from a Coman assist in to restore their two-goal lead, but PSG held on to the top spot to leave Bayern second.

Combined with their defeat to Strasbourg on Saturday, PSG have now lost two consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 14, 2014, a span of 173 games.

Meanwhile, Celtic secured their spot in the Europa League despite losing 1-0 at home to Anderlecht.

A 74th-minute Jozo Simunovic own goal was the difference on the night, but Anderlecht would have needed two more to finish third, after losing their home tie to Celtic 3-0 in September.
