Stage set for Chelsea's European showdown after Stoke drubbing

JOSE MOURINHO smashed his fist into the palm of his hand half-a-dozen times and insisted: "It is going to be a special night."

The Chelsea manager was talking about tomorrow, when his team face Paris St Germain in the second leg of their Champions League quarter final, 3-1 down from a disastrous first game in France last week.

His focus shifted to the return minutes after this comfortable win over Stoke had sent them back to the top of the Premier League, if only briefly. He has already written off his team's chance of winning that competition.

But Tuesday at Stamford Bridge could be one of those famous European nights. The stage is set, as it was in March 2012, when Chelsea overturned a 3-1 first-leg deficit by Napoli 4-1 to go through tot he quarter-finals.

Frank Lampard warned Chelsea they must not go gung ho on Tuesday, must not get caught out by a powerful PSG team. It was though, mightily useful of Stoke to turn up, lie down, and boost morale.

"Yes, it could be a special night - no! Special it will be, for sure," said Mourinho. "It's a big game, an almost impossible job, so let's go.

"Last year I lost 4-1 in Dortmund with Real Madrid and I enjoyed the second game, until the last second. In that last second, we were out. But during the 90 minutes I enjoyed it.

"We risked everything, we got to 2-0 up, in the last period of the game my goalkeeper came up and if we'd scored we'd have gone through and been in the final. Brilliant.

"What's important on Tuesday is that the players give everything, that they leave nothing on the field.

With the squad we've got we can win by two goals for sure

"I'm not nervous about it. I'd have been nervous if we'd won 1-0 or 2-0 in Paris. But losing 3-1 there means I am not nervous. I want to enjoy the fight, enjoy the risk. I want to enjoy that. So, no, no nerves.

"We have to enjoy the 90 minutes. Maybe the 120 minutes. If we lose, we don't enjoy it. But the 90 minutes, you enjoy."

Lampard, who scored his 250th club goal on Saturday, warned: "We have to be positive but at the same time keep our heads. With the squad we've got we can win by two goals for sure. But we can't be too gung-ho. It's about finding the balance.

"We've got to get away from that feeling of trying to chase a goal from minute one. It's more about being focused and getting our attitude and pace right."

Mourinho reckons veteran striker Samuel Eto'o has a small chance of making tomorrow's game after his hamstring injury, but a final decision will be taken today.

Against Stoke, he gave Fernando Torres another chance up front and once again the Spaniard did not take it.

Chelsea did not need him. They opened the scoring when Mohamed Salah, who had an excellent game, rifled in his shot from Nemanja Matic's pullback. Lampard got the second when he scored from the rebound after his penalty had been saved by Asmir Begovic, and Willian claimed a lovely third with a curling shot.

Stoke barely troubled Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, and manager Mark Hughes moaned: "Chelsea didn't have to play anything like to their capabilities, and that is the disappointment. We've played much better than that."
