Mourinho reflects on his business in the transfer market

The Blues have already secured the services of Diego Costa (£32m), Cesc Fabregas (£30m), Filipe Luis (£20m) and Didier Drogba (free) this summer.

And Mourinho believes he's found the missing pieces to last season's squad, which finished third in the Premier League and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

The Portuguese tactician admits he didn't sign a striker in the winter window because his main target was Costa, who would have been ineligible to play in the Champions League due to this appearances for Atletico Madrid.

"During last season, in the January market everybody spoke about us buying a striker and trying to attack the title in the second part of the season," Mourinho said.

"In that moment we didn’t make a move because our first target was Diego Costa.

"So if you ask me was Diego a target in May or in June, no - Diego was a target that we started smelling very, very early.

Cesc Fabregas Player Profile

Mourinho believes Fabregas, who has plenty of experience of playing in the England's top-flight with rivals Arsenal, offers something different to his midfield.

The Blues boss added: "We clearly needed a player for the midfield with a different profile and we had two or three options, but, my club were fantastic with the way they killed the situation with Fabregas.

"What I did was explain to the player what I want from him, explain to the player what was waiting for him, tried to make the player believe that the move was the perfect move for him.

Filipe Luis Player Profile

Luis was the third player to join the London outfit this summer, and Mourinho believes Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic can return to their favoured positions with the arrival of the Brazilian.

"After that (Fabregas deal), we needed a pure left-back, a real left-back," Mourinho continued.

"We always felt that Filipe was a very stable player and one which gave us multi-solutions because I can play Azpi right-back and Ivanovic centre-back because of Filipe."

Didier Drogba Player Profile

Drogba is the latest player to join the Blues, making his return to the club after his departure in 2012, and Mourinho still considers the target man as one of the best goalscorers in Europe.

We went specifically to get these targets and this is what we need

Jose Mourinho

"We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe, still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League.

"I have brought him back because as a player he has certain qualities to make the team stronger. The team is not about the 11, it is about the different options.

"We went specifically to get these targets and this is what we need."
