The Blues boss explained the money United offered for Spain's Mata - £37m - was enough to turn his head.

"In the modern football and the new economic reality [for Chelsea], if Man Utd pays you an important amount of money he has to go," Mourinho told The Telegraph.

Meanwhile, former Manchester United manager David Moyes has expressed his surprise the club let go of home-grown talent Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck was sold to Arsenal for £16m this summer.

And Moyes, who was sacked after 10 months in charge at Old Trafford, said: "There are not many young British players out there, so it was a bit of a surprise for me."

Daley Blind believes he can live up to playing for a 'big club'.

The former Ajax star has settled in well in Manchester and wants to propel the club forward to title success.

Transfers:

Arsenal look set to beat United and Chelsea to the signature of William Carvalho, who is likely to leave Sporting Lisbon in January.

And another of Louis van Gaal's targets, Juan Cuadrado, could be heading to Chelsea as the Blues prepare to spend £23m on the Colombian.

But LVG may have better luck with Mario Suarez, Atletico's out-of-favour defensive midfielder who is looking for a way out this winter.
