Wenger led the Gunners to a vital after Danny Welbeck headed home in the second half but the victory comes after some poor performances from the Frenchman's side.

However, a banner in the visiting fans' stand called for boss Wenger to leave – "Arsene – thanks for the memories, but it's time to say goodbye" – with Gunners fans still frustrated with their team.

"I don't want to comment on that. I try to do my best for this club that I love," said Wenger.

"We are very united with the players and staff around the team, that's all you can do.

"It's easier to deal with the upwards than the downwards, but you cannot be a manger and have only one side."

Despite their win that takes them, temporarily at least, in fourth place with 20 points, Wenger's injury woes continue as Nacho Monreal struggled off in the first half, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain took a knock in the second half.
