The Gunners will turn their attention to the Argentina international after failing to land top target Karim Benzema from Real Madrid.

Spanish journalist, Kike Marin, claims they are still in the hunt for a new striker and Higuain appears to fit the bill.

However, they might have to shell out up to £69.1million, which is the buy-out clause inserted into the 27-year-old's current contract in Naples.

"Arsenal still looking for a 9. Wenger have failed their first choices… and today has been interested in Higuain," Marin said.

Arsenal could make a late move for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain

Higuain has been on Gunners boss Arsene Wenger's radar for some time.

They were linked with a move before his switch from Real Madrid to Serie A in 2013.

And the 2014 World Cup runner-up is not short of admires elsewhere, with Manchester United also thought to be interested.

Their  appears to rule them out of a move, although they are expected to be active between now and the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are understood to be desperate for a new striker.

As well as Benzema and Higuian, a bid for PSG's Edinson Cavani is also thought to be a possibility.
