The defeat to Southampton two weeks ago left the Blues with their worst start to a season in 37 years, and led to Roman Abramovich giving Mourinho the dreaded public vote of confidence.

Mourinho's men got back to winning ways on Saturday, as a Diego Costa strike and an own goal gave them a 2-0 victory against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

But the Blues were not at their fluent best and Mourinho admitted it could be some time before Chelsea hit the heights of last season again.

"In this moment it's difficult to be brilliant before we have points," Mourinho told Chelsea TV.

"What produces results is both quality, plus the other things.

"When you are not able to show your quality, you have always to be able to show the other things.

"In between quality in some moments and fantastic work by the team and the fantastic desire to win the game, the performance was solid, not brilliant.

"They wanted to win, they wanted to show that they wanted to win, they wanted to show they are together and ready to fight.

"I'm really happy because it was two long weeks after the last defeat."
