The Everton midfielder visits the Emirates on Saturday when Everton look to put a dent in Arsenal’s three-game winning run. Barkley has scored five goals already this season for club and country, with Wenger already a confirmed admirer.

Recent displays in an England shirt – where Barkley is vying for position with Arsenal stalwarts Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – showed he is not frightened of stepping up to the very highest levels and Wenger believes even though he is still only 21 he has already developed the physical attributes to give him a strong chance of succeeding.

“He has massive potential because he has a good combination of technical qualities and physical qualities,” Wenger said. “He has the absolute power of the modern player and he’s certainly one of the most promising.

“He’s around 20 years old and is a regular player in the national team. Such an early run is always a special talent.”
