Lassana Diarra joined Marseille last summer after a one-year hiatus

The former Chelsea and Arsenal man, who ended a one-year hiatus by signing for Michel's side in July, has impressed in his debut season at the Stade Velodrome.

He was voted Ligue 1's player of the month for September and has earned a recall to the French national side.

And French newspaper L'Equipe claim United have sent scouts to watch the 30-year-old, and are weighing up a possible move for the midfielder as a replacement for Michael Carrick, who is out of contract in the summer.

Diarra was brought to English football by Jose Mourinho in July 2005.

Express Sport understands Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea in September, is expecting to take over at Old Trafford this summer, meaning there could be a reunion between the midfielder and manager at Old Trafford.

Diarra failed to break into Chelsea's first-team during his two years at the club and joined Arsenal in 2007.

He spent six months with the Gunners before joining Portsmouth for £5.5million, helping the club with the FA Cup in 2008, before joining Real Madrid for £20m.
