Jose Mourinho has suggested Manchester United will move on to other targets if their bid to sign Paul Pogba continues to stall.

"We have only 25 per cent of our transfer deals to conclude before August 31 and that player [Pogba] is not the only one," said Mourinho.

"We know the profile of the player we want and have three players to fit that profile. We're going to get a fourth player but maybe it is not the one you think.

"I'm really confident Ed Woodward [United's executive vice chairman] will get the profile of the player because the squad needs balance."

Asked specifically if a deal for Pogba is still a possibility, Mourinho added: "I don't speak about players from other clubs and he's a Juventus player. We are trying to conduct transfer business in an honest, correct and institutional way.

"The only thing I can say to you is we have done 75 per cent of our market. We established four important target profiles - not faces, profiles - and we got three of them at the very early stage of the market.

"We would like the fourth signing as soon as possible but [if it takes] until the 31st of August that's fine."

But Mourinho has handed Spanish ace Juan Mata an Old Trafford lifeline following talks over his future.

Mourinho sold Mata to United in 2014 when he was Chelsea boss and reports hinted at the 28-year-old being let go again.

He said: "I sold him because he asked for that. Nobody in my previous club wanted to sell or push him. It was his decision. He was not the first option, he was not starting every game but I never left Juan Mata out of my selection of the 18 - but he was on the bench a few times.

Man Utd's move for Paul Pogba is not finalised

"We had a proposal from a big club like Manchester United. We thought in the club that the proposal was very much acceptable, that it was a very good proposal for that period three years ago. But he wanted to leave and my philosophy is I don't want players who want to leave."

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £29m bid for Palmeiras striker Gabriel Jesus.

Brazilian newspaper Estadao claim United will make an offer for the 19-year-old, who has scored 26 goals in 67 appearances.

Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been linked with the teenager.
