Roman Abramovich sacked Jose Mourinho seven months after Chelsea won the title

The Portuguese tactician was sacked by Chelsea last December after a poor start to the season.

He was given the boot just seven months after helping them secure the Premier League title.

But having lost nine of their opening 16 league games, Abramovich decided enough was enough.

And now at Manchester United, Mourinho explained why he didn’t get the chance to see out the rest of his contract in west London.

He said: “I’m not at Chelsea because the owners didn’t want me. If he (Roman Abramovich) wanted me I would still be there.”

The 53-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Red Devils in May and he is already having thoughts about staying on longer - something he has never done at his previous clubs.

“I have the contract I have and for that the owners are happy,” Mourinho said.

“To give me a new contract I will be happy to do that because that is what I want at this moment in my career, but I think it depends on many things.

“I will try to do my work to make the owners realise that I am the right guy for this job.”
