Ian Wright is upset at Arsenal's move for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted at the weekend he was hopeful of getting a deal done for Mustafi before the transfer window shuts next Wednesday.

Wenger is dealing with a defensive injury crisis at the Emirates with Per Mertesacker (knee) out for five months and Gabriel Paulista (ankle) sidelined for up to two months.

Arsenal are yet to record a win this season and followed up their opening 4-3 defeat to Liverpool with a 0-0 draw at Leicester on Saturday.

And Gunners legend Wright is certainly feeling the fans' frustration, speaking out on Twitter after reports suggested Valencia had told Arsenal to stump up £50m for Mustafi.

“Taking the piss £50 million for a player no one else is fighting us for!” Wright tweeted.

Mustafi came on as a substitute but could not help Valencia avoid a 4-2 defeat at home to Las Palmas in their La Liga opener last night.

The board and Wenger have let Arsenal fans down again!

Valencia boss Pako Ayestaran has ruled out the Germany international leaving this summer.

"Mustafi is not for sale and he will stay at Valencia. The market is open and there are still possibilities," he said.

"With Alcacer I can be as firm as with Mustafi, Lay Hoon [Valencia chairwomen] already said it.

"The president has said in public that Alcacer and Mustafi are not for sale and I have to believe her."

Wenger had suggested Arsenal were close to signing the 24-year-old.

“Mustafi? We hope it will be done,” Wenger said. “He is one of a number of players we are looking at.

“We are struggling to find the players we need, but we must be responsible.

“Mustafi is one of a number of players we are looking at, but, yes, negotiations are ongoing.”
