Rooney was introduced to the Europa League game in the 67th minute.

United struggled to break down their Ukrainian opponents before Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute to wrap up all three points.

Rooney produced the assist, picking out the Swede with a cross.

Although the 30-year-old international was dropped for the 4-1 win over Leicester last weekend, Rooney came up trumps last night.

And Mourinho has shed light on the player’s reaction to his assist after the game.

“He was laughing and saying he made a great assist," Mourinho said.

"But really he gave me what the team needs at that time, which is a presence, a second presence in the box, he's more a striker than a one [lone striker] and one went more to the right side."

United will be looking to build upon their fine win against the Foxes when they face Stoke, who they tackle on Sunday (midday).
