It has been argued that Pogba is struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League because Mourinho keeps chopping and changing his position.

And it seems the United boss still isn't sure where to play the former Juventus man, making the bizarre claim that he could become a centre-back.

"He’s a top player and I think he could be a phenomenal central defender," Mourinho told Sky Sports.

"With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body...

"For his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender too."

However, Mourinho doesn't believe this uncertainty about Pogba's role in the team is having any impact on his ability to settle at the club.

And the manager has argued the France international's slow start to life at Old Trafford is merely because he's used to an Italian style of football.

"The problem is not the position," Mourinho added.

"The problem is not the tactical system. The problem is, in my opinion, somebody that comes from a different style of football.

"He needs time to be at his best level in football that is really difficult to play, especially for midfield players."
