Antonio Valencia is out of contract at the end of the season and Manchester United have the option of a one-year extension.

And Jose Mourinho, who last week admitted he tried to sign Valencia at Real Madrid, has suggested United are keen to active.

The Portuguese tactician recently revealed that the club will also trigger a clause to keep striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford for next season.

“Big clubs like Manchester United want to keep their best players," Mourinho said of the 31-year-old.

"And the best players at the biggest clubs want to stay for the rest of their career.”

Mourinho has transformed Valencia into a right-back this season, starting him in all but two Premier League games after he broke his arm last month.

And the Ecuador international, who has provided two assists this term, has credited the Red Devils manager for giving him confidence.

He told United's official website: "I'm thankful for the manager’s kind words and I hope to keep working hard to repay the faith he’s put in me in every game I play.

"He has given me a lot of confidence – he’s given me the chance to play. I like being at Manchester United and I want to do all I can for the team.

"I wanted to get back as soon as I possibly could, to help the team. I was helped by the medical department here at United and the great work they’ve done since my operation."
